Fried Mashed Potatoes

Chris received an order from Omaha Steak Company. In the order came some potatoes. We thought we would try them so we cooked them exactly as they told us to. This is a picture of the left overs. We weren't sure what they really were but I can tell you this ..... they were GOOD!! The outside tasted like a french fry and the inside was mashed potatoes.

Chris said he was pretty sure they were fried mashed potatoes.

2 questions

#1
Have you ever tried these?
If not, you should!

#2
Have you ever made these?
If so, PLEASE share the recipe!

Disclaimer: If you are thinking about how unhealthy these are or how I should not be eating fried foods or how many calories are in this or wondering how much butter was used..... STOP! And please don't share with me any of those thoughts!

I have eaten what we called "potato cakes" made from left over mashed potatos. I'm sure the same thing your Grandmom and Grandpop used to make. We have actually made them ourselves, but they weren't as good as my Mom's. Ours weren't as puffy either, flatter like a salmon pattie. Very good. Since yours cam frozen, you could probably spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray and bake them.

Mindy,

I had never had anything like this until I got married and my husband's mother made mashed potato pancakes from left overs. All she did was take the left overs and add an egg and maybe a little milk if they seemed a little dry. Then heat up some veggie oil in a skillet and brown them on both sides like salmon patties. It took me a couple of times before I got a good batch, but they were yummy when I finally got it down. Also try allrecipes.com or foodnetwork.com and I'm sure they would have a good recipe. Good luck!

MMMMM, those look yummy! I've never made anything like that, so I don't have a recipe. I just want to drool.

BTW, I love your disclaimer!

They are yummy! We have tried the Omaha potatoes also...a gift from two very special people. Yes, Grandpop and I have made left over potato pancakes. I'll have to think about it before I give the recipe because right now I can't remember what I did. I'll share if I remember.

I found the following recipe on the web that is supposed to be similar to what the Omaha Steak Company calls "Potatoes au Gratin"; Here's what I found -

I found this recipe but it doesn't have a batter recipe. I suppose you could use a plain batter and dip and then fry?
One recipe boards did mention they were similar to the Omaha Steaks recipe but I can't vouch for that.

AU GRATIN POTATO BALLS
Source: Recipe Friends

8 large baking potatoes
1/3 cup dried onion
8 oz. cream cheese, may use low fat
8 oz. sour cream, may use low fat
2 Tbsp. butter
salt and pepper to taste
parmesan cheese for coating balls

Bake potatoes, either in oven or microwave, Cool, peel and shred. (I use shredder on my Salad shooter)

In a large bowl combine dried onion, sour cream, cream cheese, butter and seasonings. Mix in shredded potatoes until well combined.

Take an ice cream scoop and dip out mixture and roll into a ball. Roll the potato ball in Parmesan cheese until well coated and place on a cookie sheet. Continue making balls until all mixture is gone. Cover and freeze. Once frozen the balls can be placed in plastic bags or containers and stored in freezer.

To use, remove as many as needed and place on a cookie sheet.

Bake in 350 degree F. oven for 15 to 20 minutes until lightly browned.

Original poster's hint: I have on baked all the potato balls at the same time. Cooled and then placed in the freezer. To use, if you choose to do it this way, then just reheat in the microwave. These are delicious, and a family favorite.
